Our founder Mr Ng Lim Song arrives in
Singapore from Swatow (Shantou),
Guangdong.
Ng Chye Mong, which represents “to prosper
again”, is founded in a small and humble
three-storey shophouse along Rochor Road.
Gradually, Ng Chye Mong expands from selling
Teochew braised ducks to goods such as pots,
pans, canned food, and dried goods.
The second generation of the Ng family take over the business and begins purchasing dried goods in bulk and repackaging them for retail sales.
House brand Twin Duck is created as a tribute to the braised ducks that were sold in the early days of the business.
Singapore’s tourism boom sees the opening of more food and hospitality establishments, resulting in an increase in sales.
Ng Chye Mong’s customers included hotels and restaurants such as the former Westin Hotel, Raffles Hotel, The Mayflower, Lai Wah and even Ponderosa and Jack’s Place.
The company diversifies into new markets and other business ventures including commodities trading, film production, property development, aviation, electronic product distribution and even duty-free shops.
Ng Chye Mong Pte Ltd is set up as the holding company for these various businesses and the foodservice business is renamed Ng Chye Mong Marketing. At its peak, Ng Chye Mong has more than 40 businesses in 25 countries with a US$250 million turnover, with its office situated within Thong Teck Building on Scotts Road.
Nichol Ng joins the business and learns the ropes by working on the ground. She realises the need to look further ahead and modernise the business, starting from digitising the invoicing system.
Divella appoints us as its exclusive distributor in Singapore. This is a first for the company, working with an international brand on a distribution model.
